What No One Else Can Do

“Jesus gave him back to his mother” (Luke 7:15).

Only God can give back that which was truly lost.

The widow of Nain had lost her husband and now her son. She was devastated. The funeral was processing out of the village to the graveyards. The body of her son was carried on a stretcher, and death was in the air. But, so too, life was there that day. Jesus had travelled all night to arrive at the exact right time to raise that young man back to life and give him back to his mother. It was a miracle of timing, compassion, and power.

Jesus will restore the lost to us someday also.

My nephew was killed when he was sixteen years old, and my sister waited 32 years to see him again when she went to heaven. And I can imagine our Lord Jesus giving her son back to her just like he did for the widow of Nain. The timing isn’t ours, but the restoration is real. The prophet Joel declared that the Lord will restore the years that the locust has eaten (Joel 2:25), and the apostle Peter declared that Jesus will restore all things someday (Acts 3:21).

Whatever has been taken from you can be given back to you: lost loved ones, ruined reputations, failed relationships, broken health. There is hope even in these situations.

And that hope is found only in the One who gives back that which no one else can.

Jesus.
