Moralism: The End of Christianity

“Neither do I condemn you. Go and sin no more.” (John 8:11).

We have forgotten how to be like Jesus.

Christians have become moralists instead of grace-givers. Moralism promotes pure living through restrictions and isolation. They look at the world as “us vs. them”. They are judgmental, intolerant and oppressive. The apostle Paul, who wanted to become all things to all men in order to save some, probably would be labeled, rejected and excommunicated today.

Fear has replaced love in the church.

Fear leads to finger pointing and stone throwing. There is no love in forcing morality upon others who differ from us. There is no grace in oppressing those who disagree with our point of view. There is no freedom in moralism disguised as Christianity, only insecurity, cruelty and bondage. Fear wants to kill the sinner instead of forgiving them.

Jesus knew how to accept the sinner and still reject the sin.

We need to learn how to do that too.
