Enjoying God

“There is none upon earth that I desire besides You” (Psalm 73:25).

The chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever (WSC, 1647).

Many Christians understand the first part of this statement about glorifying God. We are taught this often, we read about it much in the Bible, and we really do want to bring honor and glory to God as much as we can. So far, so good. The trouble comes when we are asked if we enjoy all this or not. We can praise God, and we can even love Him, but do we enjoy Him?

Unfortunately, we have no idea how to enjoy God.

We might think that our enjoyment of God lies in appreciating everything that He does for us. What a beautiful sunset God made. How thankful to wake up without pain this morning. Isn’t it great that God helped solve that problem we were having? All of this is well and good, but praising God for His doings isn’t exactly the same as enjoying who He is. To really enjoy God is simply wanting to be in His presence moment by moment.

The Psalmist desired nothing more on earth than God Himself.

How about you?
